Lotus Petals (Kamal) — Nelumbo nucifera

Nelumbo nucifera · Cooling · Sattvic · Heart tonic

What Ayurveda says

Pacifies Pitta and Vata; mildly increases Kapha if used heavily. Cooling, astringent–sweet.

Traditional uses

  • ·Mental restlessness, anxiety and grief — supports sattva
  • ·Cooling cardiac tonic for palpitations and Pitta-type insomnia
  • ·Excess thirst, summer heat and burning sensations
  • ·Mild bleeding disorders — heavy menses, nosebleed

How it is taken

1 tsp dried petals steeped 10 minutes in hot water as a tea, once or twice daily. Can be mixed with rose petals and a few cardamom seeds for a calming Pitta blend.

Avoid in

  • Severe Kapha congestion, low digestive fire (mandagni)
  • Hypotension — may slightly lower blood pressure
  • With sedatives or anticoagulants without supervision
  • Pregnancy in medicinal doses

Allergies

Generally well-tolerated; rare pollen sensitivity in atopic individuals.

Classical alternatives

Rose petals (Gulab) or Jatamansi for similar Pitta-calming, heart-soothing action.

When to see a doctor

Persistent or severe symptoms, pregnancy, children under 12, anyone on prescription medication, and any new or worsening condition should be reviewed by a qualified clinician (GP or vaidya) before starting Lotus Petals (Kamal). Heavy or damp Kapha types should use sparingly. Avoid on the day of any surgical procedure due to mild platelet effects.
